Annea Lockwood, composer

Born in New Zealand in 1939 and resident in the US since 1973, Annea Lockwood is a composer whose works encompass audio art, installations and concert music. Her early works include Glass Concert (1967), and Piano Transplants (1969-72), both of which are discussed in "Conversations" on this DVD.

During the 1970s and '80s she turned her attention to performance works focused on environmental sounds and life-narratives resulting in such works as World Rhythms (1975); Conversations with the Ancestors (1979, based on life stories of four women over 80); and A Sound Map of the Hudson River (1982). She also writes frequently for acoustic instruments and voice, sometimes incorporating electronics and visual elements, as in Ceci, n'est pas un piano, for piano, transducers and video (2003).

Her work has been presented in the US, Europe, Australasia and Canada, including the Whitney Museum of American Art; De Ijsbreker, Amsterdam; Artspace, Auckland; the Other Minds Festival, San Francisco; and the Bang-on-a-Can marathons in New York. Her music is available on Lovely, XI, Rattle Records, Harmonia Mundi, Lontano Records and EarthEar.
